Halloween With Puppies
October 15, 2023

Halloween is just around the corner! If you’ve recently welcomed a puppy into your household, you’re definitely in for some adorable moments. However, little Fido is very curious, and has a knack for getting into mischief. You’ll need to take some precautions to keep the little guy safe over the next few weeks. Read on as a local Houston Heights, TX vet offers some tips on keeping your furry friend safe.

Night Walks

It’s getting dark much earlier these days, so you may need to get your little buddy used to night walks. Take a flashlight with you, or get a leash with a built-in one, and pay attention to the ground. Don’t let your furry friend snack on things he may come across!

Puppyproofing

Puppyproofing is a must for anyone with a young pooch. You’ll need to keep little Fido’s penchant for gnawing on and playing with, well, everything, in mind. Anything small or sharp should be kept well out of paws’ reach. Items that are ropy or stringy are also very dangerous. That includes things like garlands, strings, and fake spiderwebs. Ask your vet for more information.

Socialization

Socialization is very important to little Fido’s emotional and mental development. It’s crucial for dogs to get used to going to new places and meeting new people. However, a costume party may be too much for the little guy. Your puppy may also get frightened by trick or treaters. Pay attention to your pooch when he interacts with others. Watch for signs that he’s getting nervous.

Foliage

Fall foliage is beautiful, but it can also be quite dangerous for a curious little pup. Don’t let your canine pal eat plants, flowers, or mushrooms! You’ll also need to be careful about lawn and garden chemicals.

Toys

It’s important for puppies to have lots of safe toys. This not only teaches them good behavior, it also keeps them entertained. Pick up a few cute, sturdy, seasonal-themed ones for your furry friend.

Costumes

Our canine pals look pretty adorable in costumes! Just be cautious when dressing a puppy. You don’t want little Fido getting scared, hot, or uncomfortable, and you definitely don’t want him eating his outfit. Keep it simple, and just put a bow tie or bandana on him.

Training

Fall is a perfect time for outdoor training sessions, and also just for exploring new spots with your pup.
