Tips For Playing With Your Cat
January 15, 2023

Cats are really fun and quirky pets. One thing that makes Fluffy such a joy is the fact that she’s super cute when she’s feeling frisky. This is one characteristic you should definitely indulge! Playing is not only fun for your furball, it’s also great for her both mentally and physically. While this isn’t rocket science, there are some things to keep in mind. A Washington Heights, TX vet offers some advice on playing with your feline pal below.

Make It Routine

Many pets feel most secure when they’re on a steady schedule. Fluffy will sort out her own napping agenda, so you don’t have to worry about that. However, you should keep your furry buddy on a stable routine for meals and playtime. Make kitty playtime a part of your usual winding down time. Just put a toy or laser pointer near your chair or sofa, and incorporate this into TV time.

Let Fluffy ‘Win’

Your furry buddy may actually get depressed and discouraged if she can never catch her prey. Make sure to let her get that catnip mouse or feather toy. (Fluffy will of course never get that elusive red dot, but she hasn’t given up yet.)

Discourage Rough Play

Cats may be cute, but they are hunters at heart. Fluffy instinctively enjoys pouncing, biting, and scratching. However, don’t let her practice on you. This is particularly important with kittens: you don’t want your furry friend to grow up thinking of you as a cat toy!

Don’t Play Favorites

Do you have more than one kitty? Make sure to pay equal attention to them. Fluffy may get quite jealous watching you play with Snowball!

Choose Safe Toys

As the saying says, there’s no accounting for taste. Fluffy may love that catnip mouse you got her, but she may also have fun batting a bottlecap around. Just don’t let your feline friend play with anything that isn’t safe. That list includes small or sharp items, anything with ropes or cords, and plastic bags and wrappers.

Have Fun

Playing with your cute pet shouldn’t be something you think of as a chore. Our feline companions are pretty adorable when they are feeling silly, so there’s a good chance that you’ll enjoy it too!
