September is Responsible Dog Ownership! Dogs are wonderful friends and companions. Fido isn’t simply a pet: he’s a family member! He’s also our therapist, workout buddy, comedian, mentor, and support system. Pooches do need a lot of care, however. That means more than simply pouring kibble into a bowl and offering belly rubs! A local Washington Heights, TX vet goes over some key aspects of good dog care below.
Proper Diet
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of any good pet care regimen. Fido’s ideal menu will depend on his age, weight, size, health, and lifestyle, so ask your vet for recommendations. Don’t go too crazy with treats, either.
Exercise
Dogs need regular activity for the same reasons people do: it helps keep their bones and muscles strong, supports cardiovascular and respiratory health, boosts immunity, and, of course, burns off extra zoomies. Most dogs need at least a daily walk, but ask your vet for specific advice.
Play/Enrichment
Fido can get quite bored and lonely with nothing to do. Make sure that your furry buddy always has lots of fun toys. It’s also important to play with him regularly. (This is another reason walks are important: they offer stimulation.)
Grooming
Dogs are super cute, but they need help with their beauty regimens. Regularly brushing and bathing Fido will help keep him clean and comfy. Nail trims and dental care are also important.
Veterinary Care
Make sure Fido sees his doctor regularly! We recommend that all pups be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on exams, vaccines, and parasite control.
Safety
This is a big one, and it encompasses many different things. Don’t let Fido run around off-leash, and take some time to make your home safe for him. That means removing potential hazards, such as toxic plants, small or sharp objects, and plastic bags or ties.
Training
Training is another must. You don’t have to go too crazy here, but your canine friend should know basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Come.
ID
This one is easy! Simply making sure Fido is microchipped and wearing ID tags could save his life one day.
Love
Love is the final magic ingredient here. This also entails many different things: spending time with Fido, keeping him comfortable, and keeping that tail going!
