Holiday Pet Hazards
December 1, 2022
Seasons’ Greetings! The holiday season can be just as fun for pets as it is for us. Our animal companions enjoy getting extra gifts and treats as much as we do! However, you will need to take some precautions to keep your furry buddy safe. A Washington Heights, TX vet lists some common hazards to be concerned about in this article.

Decorations

Fido and Fluffy are very playful, which is part of why they’re so fun. However, our furry pals don’t know what is and isn’t safe for them. Some dangerous objects include small/sharp objects, such as tinsel, ornaments and ornament hooks, small decorative figurines, and pine needles. Anything stringy, such as ribbons and garlands, is also a potential hazard, as are many seasonal plants, such as poinsettias and lilies. Keep these things out of paws’ reach! You’ll also want to watch for things that have fallen to the floor.

Food

Those scrumptious feasts take center stage in many holiday festivities, but many of the mouthwatering dishes on that spread are toxic to Fido and Fluffy. Meat on the bone is a huge no: cooked bones can break into small but sharp shards, which are extremely dangerous. Grapes and raisins are also unsafe. In fact, eating a single grape can cause dogs to go into kidney failure! Other hazardous foods include caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, avocado, pitted fruits, and anything that contains xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Candles/Fire

Candles can make your home smell and look cozy and welcoming. However, they are definitely not safe for pets. Keep candles in thick holders, and place them in spots your furry bff can’t reach. If you use a fireplace, put a grate before it

Trees

Trees are irresistible to many cats: Fluffy will just assume that you’ve offered her a giant tree of her own, hung with fun toys. Decorate the bottom part of the tree sparsely, and with kitty-safe objects. Putting a bunch of shiny ornaments within paws’ reach is just asking for trouble!

Gifts

Some pets will try to chew or play with gifts. You don’t want your four-legged friend chewing ribbon, tape, staples, plastic, or paper! Putting a puppy gate around your tree may help here. Don’t forget to get Fido and Fluffy some things of their own, either, As your Washington Heights, TX animal clinics, we’re here for you. Contact us anytime!
