Kitten Care Tips
October 1, 2022
Are you welcoming a new kitten into your household? Congratulations! It probably won’t take your tiny pet long to have you completely wrapped around her paws. Kittens are super cute! They are also super frisky. Read on as a Washington Heights, TX vet offers some insight into helping little Fluffy grow up to be happy, healthy, and maybe just a little bit spoiled.

Safety

One of your biggest duties is simply keeping your tiny furball out of trouble. Kittens are playful and curious. They also fit into some very small spaces. You’ll need to do some kittenproofing. That entails addressing anything that isn’t safe for little Fluffy to eat, play with, or sleep on. Ask your vet for tips.

Handling

Socialization is key for kittens. Spend lots of time petting and playing with your feline friend, and get her used to being brushed and held.

Petiquette

This is the time to teach your feline pal the do’s and don’ts of being a good kitty. Establish house rules, such as staying indoors and not jumping on counters, from the start. Rough play is another issue you would need to address. If your feisty furball tries to attack you, tell her ‘No’ in a disapproving voice. You can also tell her to put her claws up.

Litterbox

When your furry little friend is all grown up, you can use any litter you like. For now, though, avoid clay and clumping litters: kittens sometimes accidentally ingest litter, which can be very dangerous.

Veterinary Care

Little Fluffy will need to come in a few times. Spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, exams, screenings, and vaccinations are all on the agenda. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. At home, keep an eye out for signs of sickness. Baby cats can get very sick very quickly! Call us immediately if you notice anything unusual.

Bonding

Did you know that cats see their humans basically as second parents? We can form very close and beautiful bonds with our feline buddies. However, you’ll need to nurture that relationship. It’s important for your kitten to feel loved! Pay lots of attention to little Fluffy! Talk to your pint-sized pet, play with her, offer toys and treats, and let her snooze on your lap. As your local Washington Heights, TX animal clinic, we are dedicated to offering top-notch veterinary care. Please feel free to contact us anytime!
